November 21 – 23 2019

In the site of a former glass blowing workshop, ‘Zero Governor’ brings together artists working with energies as transformative agents, exploring the potential of heat, light, and power to act upon matter.

I used a different installation strategy for Not Yet Titled in ‘Zero Governor’. Usually before a show I test several configurations in studio. I think about how the works sit relative to the overall space and consider how I want the viewer to move around or experience the work. I find the grid helpful when thinking about space, it’s rigid pattern, right angles and straight lines give me a structure to measure and work against. The fluid organic forms in the sculptures stand juxtaposed and exaggerated against this formality.

When dropping my works off at DEMO for the Zero Governor install, I casually stacked the plinths in a loose group and supplied a detailed installation plan so the works could be installed without me. When I came the following day to help we discussed how leaving them in situ, in the loose grouping where they sat from the previous days drop off was itself an installation strategy. This suited the space, responded well to the other works in the show and allowed me to recognise the benefits of always remaining open to new ideas and unpredicted developments. The work didn’t lose anything from letting go of the grid or plan. This experience taught me to have a plan, but also remain open to change in response to the space during installation, rather than being too rigid.
